The Perfect Time to Upgrade Drupal to 8 is Now
2019-02-14

Drupal 8 was released nearly three years ago as of this post date. There are nearly 7,000 contributed modules available for Drupal 8, so we generally see either a module has moved into core (e.g. views), been upgraded to Drupal 8, or has a Drupal 8 equivalent. This is not always the case, which is why it’s important to assess your site before thinking about an upgrade.

Once Drupal 9 is released (around June 3rd, 2020), like Drupal 6, Drupal 7 and 8 will be end-of-lifed in 2021, meaning it will only receive critical security updates for core, but not necessarily for contributed modules. Why wait until everyone is in a rush to upgrade their site when you can start now?

The timer above shows the time left until Drupal 7 and 8 end-of-life (EOL). If your website is running Drupal 7 or older, it's a very good time to consider upgrading to Drupal 8 now because upgrading from 8 to 9 will be more seamless and far easier than previous upgrades. If you'd like to learn about the new features in Drupal 8, our blogs here provide in-depth coverage of Drupal 8 features, or you can get a summary here: 16 reasons to upgrade to Drupal 8

Why Upgrade to Drupal 8 Now if it will be EOL Status "Soon"?

The simple answer is, Drupal 9 is simply replacing depreciated code, and it will be backward compatible with Drupal 8 modules, so long as the modules don't use depreciated code. This is an amazing first for the Drupal Community that's promised easy upgrades going forward. The upgrade from Drupal 8 to 9 will happen in minutes for the majority of Drupal sites.
